The Vokalorkestret (eng. Vocalorchestra) was formed in 2003, in the city of Århus, Denmark by Mads Tilst, singer and musical teacher.
It was his vision to form a group where improvisation was to be the principal element in the crea-tion of vocal-music, and it was to be made in the present. It was the joint responsibility of all the participants to contribute to the creative work. It turned out to be so successful that in 2006 the Vokalorkestret decided to reorganize and continue their work as a team, now deciding the artistic and musical directions as a group without a specific leader. The group was already formally orga-nized as an association and by springtime in 2007, the umbilical cord was finally severed and Mads and the group Vocalorkestret parted as friends.
Then came ”the wild period”. No rules, no arrangements except the decision to meet every thursday to make music and …”see what happens…?!”. And strange music arose, complicated and dense, the individual voice engulfed in the mutual soundscape, a massive sea of noise and movement. A wave might rise suddenly and fall again into the sea of music. And onwards, and more… These elements are still important in the sound of the Vokalorkestret, and an incubator for the experiments to come.
When improvising there are many questions without definite answers; Can you sing a conventional tune now/here? What happens if you step out as a solo performer, within the musical framework or within the social organisation of the group? Can limitations be an inspiration? Can the lack of rules make you lazy and uninspired? How do we discover new places to go musically? What is wrong with the old places, if anything? How do we go about making concerts? With whom would we like to get in touch? Are there other groups out there like us? What would we like to do with them? What is the Vokalorkestret about anyway? Should we change our name to something else?
This is a limitless project where we are constantly working with the balance between the individual and the group, between freedom and rules, between the inside and the outside. And we make music and have fun while doing it.
